Leigh Place is excited to announce a new pilot project: “Generations Connect”, an initiative provided in partnership with Canterbury Bankstown Council and a local High School. This program aims to build strong connections between our seniors and local youth. Run across a six-week period, students and residents will participate in an intergenerational program that aims to reduce barriers, address social isolation, and create deeper connections across the community.
Program Themes and Objectives:
- Intergenerational Engagement: Encouraging interactions between seniors and young people to foster mutual respect and understanding.
- Breaking Down Barriers: Challenging stereotypes and misconceptions that different generations may hold about each other.
- Reducing Isolation: Providing companionship and stimulating activities to help diminish feelings of loneliness among our residents.
- Community Service: Integrating the program into the school curriculum to enhance students’ learning experiences with real-world community service.
- Meaningful Connections: Creating opportunities for young people to make a positive impact on the lives of seniors.
Participating students will gain invaluable life skills and experiences through their involvement in Generations Connect, including:
- Rapport Building: Developing strong relationships.
- Wellbeing and Self-Worth: Understanding the importance of wellbeing and feeling valued through community engagement.
- Leadership and Ownership: Taking charge of a program, fostering leadership, and a sense of responsibility.
- Empathy and Understanding: Cultivating empathy and a deeper understanding of different life experiences.
- Community Development Insight: Learning about the impact of community services and the importance of giving back.
- Confidence Building: Gaining confidence through meaningful social interactions and contributions.
- Social Cohesion: Strengthening bonds within the community by working together towards common goals.
