Honouring Brother Thomas Oliver Pickett AM – Senior Australian of the Year 2025

Brother Thomas Oliver Pickett AM is the co-founder of Wheelchairs For Kids, an initiative he started in 1996 with the aim of providing adjustable wheelchairs and occupational therapy services to children in developing countries at no cost. Since its inception, the organisation has donated more than 60,000 custom-built wheelchairs to children across over 80 countries.

Under Thomas’ leadership, Wheelchairs For Kids has grown into one of Western Australia’s largest volunteer-driven charities, with more than 250 retirees contributing their time. With an average age of 74, the charity stands as one of Australia’s oldest volunteer-run organisations. Additionally, a network of 550 volunteers from aged care and community groups assist in creating wheelchair soft supports, crocheting rugs, and making soft toys for the children.

A key innovation led by Thomas was the creation of a low-cost, adjustable wheelchair design that meets World Health Organization standards, offering children a wheelchair that grows with them – an industry first.

Thomas’ 26 years of selfless service through Wheelchairs For Kids exemplifies the power of community and generosity. His contributions have touched countless lives, creating a lasting impact through his dedication to improving the lives of others.
